WWE fans are truly spoilt for choice when picking their favourite matches of the past 12 months.
Not everyone agrees on who should hold titles and what performers deserve to be pushed to the forefront of Raw and SmackDown.
But one thing was never in doubt in 2016 and that was the quality of bouts regularly delivered by AJ Styles, Kevin Owens and co.
Fans can enjoy more content than ever before and some of the best encounters were to be found exclusively on the WWE Network.
This countdown will focus purely on WWE's main roster, but honourable mentions must go to Kota Ibushi and Cedric Alexander for their Cruiserweight Classic clash.
Meanwhile Shinsuke Nakamura and Sami Zayn, along with The Revival and DIY, also deserve a big shout out for their epic NXT Takeover battles.
But enough of the talking, let's get down to business. Here's the top 10 WWE matches of 2016 - in one man's humble opinion!
10. Cesaro vs Sheamus ended in a no-contest in the final match of their best of seven series at Clash of Champions in September
When Cesaro and Sheamus embarked on a Best of Seven Series, few observers predicted that fans would become so invested in the outcome.
But after Sheamus went 3-0 ahead and Cesaro rallied to make it 3-3, it set the stage for a thrilling and intense finale between two physical specimens.
Some of the sequences were staggering - the Swiss Superman even unleashing a Rey Mysterio 619 ahead of a flying crossbody and a springboard corkscrew uppercut.
The Celtic Warrior nearly got the win with a Brogue Kick, before an equally impressive near fall after Cesaro's Neutralizer, and Sheamus' devastating White Noise at ringside.
The pair absolutely tore into each other, one suicide dive to the outside by Cesaro nearly seeing him break his neck, before medics ruled neither could continue.
The psychology in the match and the story that unfolded was such that when it ended in a draw, the Indianapolis crowd blasted over and over: "Let Them Fight."
9. Team SmackDown defeated Team Raw in a 5-on-5 Survivor Series elimination match at Survivor Series in November
The six-man Money in the Bank ladder match in June was a strong competitor for the wildest multi-man brawl in WWE in 2016.
But the traditional 5-on-5 Survivor Series elimination match had a little bit of everything and was relentlessly entertaining.
Ultimately Bray Wyatt recorded one of the biggest wins of his career by helping Team SmackDown defeat Team Raw.
Raw's Braun Strowman pinned SmackDown's Dean Ambrose when Dean's rival AJ Styles - on the night his team captain - did nothing to intervene.
Ambrose's pal James Ellsworth held Strowman's leg so he was counted out at ringside, leading to the monster hurling him off the stage and through a table.
Raw captain Kevin Owens was goaded into getting himself disqualified by AJ, while the Universal Champion's best friend Chris Jericho fell to a Randy Orton's RKO.
Shane McMahon had earlier hit Strowman with a flying elbow through an announce table, but he could not survive a harsh mid-air spear from Roman Reigns.
Ambrose re-emerged and reformed The Shield with Reigns and Seth Rollins to triple powerbomb AJ through a table, allowing Seth to pin the World Champion.
Luke Harper appeared to help Orton end Rollins' night with a phenomenal airborne RKO, before the unpopular Reigns mounted a final stand.
He went to spear Bray, but Randy pushed his new master aside and selflessly took the bullet, allowing Wyatt to nail Roman with Sister Abigail for the win.
8. Triple H (c) defeated Dean Ambrose to retain the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Roadblock in March
Triple H narrowly avoided losing his WWE World Heavyweight Championship to Dean Ambrose at Roadblock.
It seemed incredibly unlikely that The Game would drop the title ahead of his WrestleMania 32 showdown with Roman Reigns.
But he and The Lunatic Fringe made fans believe it was possible as Ambrose came within a whisker of beating the 14-time world champion.
The story of the match was the wildman of WWE showing uncharacteristic strategy by baiting and angering Triple H and repeatedly targeting his left leg.
In a thrilling sequence he hit Dirty Deeds and gained a three count, only to have the pin overruled because his feet were under the ropes.
However, he paid the price for his daredevil approach when he missed Triple H with a flying elbow and crashed onto an announce table.
When he just managed to make it back into the ring to avoid a count-out, HHH was waiting to Pedigree him into the canvass and snatch victory.
7. AJ Styles (c) defeated Dean Ambrose to retain the WWE World Championship in a TLC match at TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs in December
AJ Styles retained his world title at WWE TLC after Dean Ambrose was shockingly betrayed by his friend James Ellsworth.
The Phenomenal One and The Lunatic Fringe produced an instant classic brawl in the famous Tables, Ladders & Chairs match.
Ambrose sent Styles flying into four chairs, then jumped off a ladder to put him through an announce table with a diving elbow drop.
Dean climbed high to retrieve the WWE World Championship, but Styles saved his reign by knocking him down with a Phenomenal Forearm.
AJ hit a Springboard 450° Splash to the outside onto Dean on a table, in one of the most breathtaking moves in WWE history.
It was then Ambrose's oddball pal Ellsworth emerged, distracting a furious AJ, who tried to give him a Styles Clash on the steel steps.
He was rescued by Dean, who hit AJ with Dirty Deeds, yet when Ambrose went to grab the belt, Ellsworth shoved him off a ladder and through another table.
6. Charlotte Flair defeated Sasha Banks (c) 3-2 in a 30-minute Iron Man match to win the WWE Raw Women's Championship at Roadblock: End of the Line in December
Charlotte bested Sasha Banks in an exceptionally intense main event at WWE Hell in a Cell to win the Raw Women's Championship.
The landmark night in Boston saw a pair of female competitors headline a WWE pay-per-view for the first time in the company's history.
Sadly the botched finish to their Hell in a Cell match was an underwhelming climax and just prevented that bout from troubling this top 10.
There was no such issues when they clashed again in an emotional and dramatic 30-minute Ironman match, which settled their epic rivalry.
Bold booking saw the score level at 0-0 as we passed the halfway mark, but then Charlotte hit Natural Selection off the top rope to make it 1-0.
The champion Sasha levelled by stealing a pin with a quick roll-up, then dodged a moonsault and locked in her Bank Statement to clinch a 2-1 lead.
The tide turned against The Boss when Charlotte began targeting her left leg with deadly precision, weakening the knee with repeated attacks.
She applied her dad Ric Flair's signature Figure Four Leglock and bridged into her Figure Eight variation moments before the bell, when Sasha was forced to submit, making it 2-2.
Sudden death overtime was announced and they expertly teased a couple of quick pinfalls, before The Queen resumed her assault on the champion's tender leg.
Sasha - with blood flowing from her mouth and seemingly in absolute agony - had no choice but to surrender to another Figure Eight, as Charlotte became a four-time women's champion.
It was another top outing for Flair, who has improved so quickly, and Banks showed such resilience that despite losing to Charlotte once again, she emerged looking her equal.
Their trading back and forth of the belt wasn't to everyone's tastes, but the clear message was either woman was capable of defeating the other on any given night.
5. AJ Styles defeated Dean Ambrose (c) to win the WWE World Championship at Backlash in September
AJ Styles cemented his status as the best wrestler in the world by capturing the WWE World Championship from Dean Ambrose at Backlash.
Ambrose may have been the face on paper, but fans found it impossible not to get behind a man who has now held the WWE, NJPW, NWA and ROH world titles.
The champion was booed when he resisted Styles' attempts to weaken his left leg for his Calf Crusher submission and never really looked in command.
However, he showed no sign of quitting and simply would not give in to repeated attacks, including a beautiful springboard 450°splash from AJ.
Ambrose, whose title run lasted just three months, was protected to some extent by the finish, which saw Styles block Dirty Deeds by shoving him into the referee.
AJ glanced over to check that Mike Chioda was down injured before nailing Dean with a low blow and hitting his patented Styles Clash for the win.
It was a magical moment for fans to see someone who has proven they are the top talent in the business win the number one title of the world’s biggest wrestling company
Commentator Mauro Ranallo summed it up best by declaring: "A sight most of us thought we would never see, AJ Styles in possession of the WWE World Championship!"
4. Roman Reigns (c) defeated AJ Styles in an Extreme Rules match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Extreme Rules in May
Roman Reigns survived a Styles Clash on a steel chair to defeat AJ Styles at Extreme Rules, but the real winner of the night was the Phenomenal One.
If there were any doubts that AJ would make it in WWE they were surely dispelled by this event, following the pair's impressive first clash at Payback.
The pair had brawled through the crowd in heated exchanges before Roman tossed him over his shoulder with a back bodydrop through the main announce table.
Reigns utilised a cool Razor's Edge sit-out powerbomb for a two count but Styles
