WWE 205 Live star Jack Gallagher: 'If Brian Kendrick is the Man with the Plan, I'm Plan B' - Mirror.co.uk

WWE's new one-hour Cruiserweight Division programme 205 Live airs for the first time tonight on the WWE Network.

The live weekly show will showcase talents including British stars Jack Gallagher and Noam Dar, who made a big splash across the pond earlier this year.

Manchester's Gallagher made it to the second round of the inaugural WWE Cruiserweight Classic tournament, while Dar, from Ayr, Scotland, reached the quarter finals.

Since then Dar, 23, has been called up to the main roster and appeared on Raw, but fans are still waiting anxiously to catch another glimpse of Gallagher.

The 26-year-old "extraordinary gentleman" is a master grappler, trained at the famous Snake Pit in Wigan, with a passion for the classic British wrestling style.

Showing every Tuesday, 205 Live will be called by Mauro Ranallo, the voice of SmackDown Live, and Corey Graves, colour commentator for Monday Night Raw.

Gallagher spoke to the Mirror about his WWE experience so far, the format of 205 Live, and facing the Cruiserweight Champion Brian Kendrick.

When we last spoke in July, you were midway through the WWE Cruiserweight Classic tournament. How did you enjoy that experience overall?

I thought the Cruiserweight Classic was an informative experience, I really enjoyed it because of that. Just meeting so many people from so many different cultures, with so many different wrestling styles, and just the realisation there was so much more to learn in wrestling and so much more that could be done in sports entertainment. It was a super positive experience, even though I didn't come away with the win and that lovely trophy.

You pinned Fabian Aichner - a physically strong Italian performer - in your first round match, following a devastating dropkick. He utilises a very different style to you.

Yeah I think everyone has got a different style to me to be honest. I'm very unique. Everyone keeps reminding me of the fact, because of the different old school wrestling influences I bring to the Americas. Fabian was very interesting and then I faced Akira Tozawa in the second round. I actually had a bit more experience wrestling the Japanese style prior to the tournament. I just wish I had got my hands on someone like TJ Perkins who has the hybrid style, or Tony Nese or Cedric Alexander at some point.

They are some of the cruiserweight stars who have already made an impact on WWE Raw and at pay-per-view. You are yet to make your debut - can we expect to see you on Monday nights soon?

Well I'm currently living in Florida, so I would say watch this space.

You mentioned Tozawa there - was he someone you had faced before during your time in Japan?

No, Akira was not someone I had faced prior to the WWE. He was mostly contracted to Dragon Gate, whereas I was in Pro Wrestling Zero1, so unfortunately our paths never crossed.

Like you, he was named as part of the new Cruiserweight Division on the September 5 episode of Raw and will be part of the new WWE Network exclusive show 205 Live, which airs for the first time after SmackDown this week. Do you hope to face him again in the future?

To be honest I hope to thoroughly thrash everyone in the Cruiserweight Division.

You previously talked about your desire to submit Zack Sabre Jnr and show people who is the epitome of the British style in modern wrestling. Sadly we didn't get to see you get your hands on him.

I'm incredibly sorry I didn't get my hands on Zack as well, the Battle of Britain would have been quite enjoyable.

How excited are you about the prospect of a cruiserweight-only show and the chance for you and your peers to showcase what you can do over an hour each week?

It being a live in-ring show, I think it's just a further continuation hopefully of what the Cruiserweight Classic brought. We've had spots here and there on Raw, but Raw is such a large circus, that we were sort of finding our own spot on it, whereas now we're bringing our own show to town. I'm very much looking forward to it. I actually want to see how the other cruiserweights react to it. I wonder what kind of pressure they will be coming under now the spotlight is more heavily upon us.

Some observers have commented that the division possibly needs more time to connect with fans, who perhaps aren't familiar with a lot of the performers. Do you think 205 Live will help achieve that?

I think you have just got so many strong performers and so many strong characters in the WWE right now, having any time to yourself is a positive. The interesting thing about the classic was we were in a tournament format and a tournament allows you to create a narrative that is very easy for anyone to follow, as with any sort of sporting tournament. I think withy 205 Live there is just a sort of consistency there, there will be familiar faces, interviews, us being ourselves and just informing ourselves of who we are.

Could it follow a similar format to NXT then, with it's own plots, storylines and feuds, or will it be more a collection of matches?

It will be an hour in-ring show, so I'm under the impression we have to go out and wrestle and that will be the show. Think of it like the Cruiserweight Classic, but the weekly television show version.

A lot of people reference your classic British approach and how you incorporate elements of amateur and 'catch-as-catch' wrestling. Do you think that style that you bring will resonate with American audiences?

I think it does, because it already has resonated with American audiences. The Cruiserweight Classic got me no end of attention. I think as well the uniqueness of the style, a style that has not been seen for such a long time just makes it stand out. I think there are a lot of people trying to do what I do and are just doing it very badly. And I'm one of the few guys who has gone on television and is doing it very well.

Another of the British stars in the Cruiserweight Division who we have seen on the main roster, Noam Dar, made his Raw debut in Glasgow this month and competed at Survivor Series in the Kickoff pre-show. How pleased were you for him to get that opportunity?

To be honest I'm very pleased for anyone from our neck of the woods to do well, Britain in general. We have such a strong talent pool of wrestlers and performers for so long now that even getting one or two of us through seems like such a victory. Hopefully it opens the floodgates for the rest of the guys coming over as well.

It's great to see that there now appears to be a clear pathway developing from the independent scene here in the UK to WWE in America, whether it's to NXT or the Cruiserweight Division.

Yeah, one can only hope really. I think it's very similar to Hollywood in that once one person has done it one way, they kind of seal up the hole behind them and you have to kind of find another way. I think there is a lot of talent and a lot of it just comes down to timing and opportunity. Hopefully now the opportunity is there and the timing is right so you will see a good handful of British guys over here very soon.

What have your thoughts been on the fledgling Cruiserweight Division so far? Have you enjoyed the feud between TJ Perkins and Brian Kendrick?

I enjoy all the work of the cruiserweights because everyone seems to be doing something different. I kept up with TJ and with Brian just because I have a vested interest where that belt ends up. It's an interesting way for us to be introduced to the world, particularly in that you've got the young up-and-comer in TJ, even though he has been wrestling for a long time he's new to the WWE Universe, and the much more established Brian Kendrick. It was a fascinating couple they made.

You have spoken of your admiration for Brian Kendrick, who is the Cruiserweight Champion. Would you relish the chance to work a programme with him?

I think if Brian Kendrick is 'the Man with the Plan', you can call me 'Plan B'.

Can we expect to see you on the debut episode of 205 Live?

I like to keep everything under my hat until it's announced. I didn't announce I was part of the Cruiserweight Classic until it was on. All I can say is please tune in live to 205 Live.

You can see 205 Live when it premieres following SmackDown LIVE at 3am GMT, exclusively on WWE Network.
