A WWE Hall of Famer wants to be the next mayor of Houston - USA TODAY

Could the “Spin-a-roonie” be coming to City Hall of Houston?

WWE Hall of Famer Booker T. has announced his plans to run for mayor of his hometown in 2019.

“I have experienced both sides of life, from living with rats and roaches to being a Hall of Famer at one of the largest global brands and publicly traded companies in the world,” he said in a statement posted on Twitter. “Today I am a successful small business owner building brands of my own and I believe in my heart that all Houstonians, regardless of their economic circumstances deserve the same opportunities to build a better live for themselves,”

Booker T. is a five-time world champion who won multiple tag team titles with his brother, Steve Ray, during a wrestling career that began in 1989 and ended last summer with his formal retirement. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013 and currently works on WWE Network pre-shows for pay-per-views.

He will challenge incumbent Mayor Sylvester Turner, who took over in January.

Booker T. is host of a radio show in Houston called “Heated Conversations” and it appears as if what he heard from his listeners encouraged him to run.

Booker T.’s inspiring story began in poverty in Houston after the death of his father before he was 1-year-old and the death of his mother when he was 13.

His time as a youth included a 19-month prison sentence after a guilty plea for armed robberies at Wendy’s restaurants when he was a teenager.

After prison, he was a single father trying to makes ends meet at a storage company when he and Stevie Ray were introduced to a wrestling school. His boss at the storage company helped pay for wrestling school and he debuted in the early 1990s as G.I. Bro.

The Huffman brothers eventually got to World Championship Wrestling and were named Harlem Heat, even though neither had ties to New York.

Booker T was among the most successful from the WCW wrestlers who transitioned to WWE after it bought WCW with his trademark Spin-a-roonie. He also had a run as King Booker, working with real life wife Sharmell.

Booker T said he would have additional announcements of his plans going forward.

“My love for our city and my desire to be a positive change agent for Houston is not new, in fact, it has been a significant motivator in my life for decades,” he said.

“I look forward to have a dialogue with the voters of Houston and if I am so privileged to serve, I will fight for them as hard as I have fought for myself and my family over the last 30 years.”
