Spirit Squad members Kenny Dykstra and Mike Mondo have quickly established themselves as featured members of the SmackDown Live roster since they returned to the WWE.
However, that return to TV stardom has come at a price for Dykstra, who has reportedly lost his day job due to his WWE commitments.
The youngest member of the Spirit Squad was fired from a non-profit charity for which he was a director, according to Pro Wrestling Sheet. Dykstra seemingly got the axe because he missed too much time from work to make appearances with WWE over the last month and a half.
Kenny, who is 30 years old, apparently felt that missing so much work was a worthwhile risk as he tries to live his dream once more as a full-time professional wrestler. But the Spirit Squad are working on a pay-per-appearance basis, and WWE has yet to offer Kenny Dykstra a full-time deal.
Dykstra was apparently totally understanding about the decision to fire him.
The Spirit Squad returned to the WWE last month as part of the Miz’s feud with Dolph Ziggler. The Showoff was an original member of the Spirit Squad when he performed as Nicky, and won the World Tag Team Championships with the group back in 2006.
The Spirit Squad lasted less than a year on the main roster before disbanding, with all members except for Kenny returning to the Ohio Valley Wrestling development system. Dykstra continued to compete on Raw until he was drafted to SmackDown in June 2007. Kenny wrestled infrequently on the blue brand until he was released from his WWE contract in November 2008.
Kenny Dykstra continued to make appearances on the independent circuit until the Spirit Squad reformed in October on SmackDown Live. He and Mikey mocked Ziggler over the time he spent in the Spirit Squad and then on The Miz’s orders attacked Dolph. They returned at No Mercy the following Sunday to distract Ziggler, whose career was on the line in an Intercontinental Championship match with The Miz, though Ziggler won.
The following week, Kenny Dykstra earned the Spirit Squad a WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship shot when he pinned Heath Slater, one half of the champions, in a six-man tag team match, in which the Spirit Squad teamed with the Miz against Ziggler, Slater, and Rhyno. However, Rhyno and Slater retained the titles in the title match the following week.
The Spirit Squad fell short once again a week later, as they lost to American Alpha in a match to determine which team would join the SmackDown Live group of five tag teams to face Raw in a 10-on-10 tag team traditional Survivor Series match at the eponymous pay-per-view.
However, Dykstra and Mondo were not included in this week’s tag team turmoil match to determine the new No. 1 contenders for the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship, with American Alpha picking up the win.
If both Spirit Squad members manage to obtain full-time WWE deals, they’ll fill out a tag team roster that’s grown leaps and bounds on SmackDown Live.
American Alpha were poised to face Rhyno and Slater at the upcoming TLC pay-per-view, but they’ll have to take on the Wyatt Family members of Bray Wyatt and Randy Orton next week for that opportunity. Rumors are swirling that the Wyatts will win that match and go on to defeat Rhyno and Slater before eventually losing the titles to American Alpha.
If that turns out to be the case, the Spirit Squad could prove a strong foil for American Alpha as the champions, with both teams working an athletic style of wrestling. They’d be a welcome permanent addition to the SmackDown Live roster, assuming WWE does indeed offer full-time deals to the Spirit Squad. Perhaps then it will have been truly worth it for Dysktra to lose his job.
